The League of American Bicyclists is proud to announce Bicycle Garage Indy/BGI Fitness (BGI) has been named as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB), one of only 12 Gold Level BFB’s and the only BFB in Indiana. BGI is one of the 45 new BFB award winners. “We’re delighted to highlight Bicycle Garage Indy and the ways in which they are getting more people on bikes,” stated League President Andy Clarke. “In today’s challenging economic climate, businesses with healthy, happy and productive employees are going to be the most competitive and the most sustainable – the Bicycle Friendly Business program recognizes some of the best examples of this in practice.” Businesses that apply for the award designation inspire and encourage their peers. Bicycle Garage Indy/BGI Fitness serves as an example for best practices and innovations in bicycle friendliness at the workplace and community at large. BGI makes bicycling an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as secure bicycle parking, showers. BGI also provides bicycle commuting incentives through BGI’s Green Team program which offers $0.15/mile in BGI gift cards for employees who commute by bicycle. BGI employees commuted more than 3270 trips, totaling 28,484 miles by bike in the first year of the program. BGI is also very involved in promoting bicycling to work in Indianapolis through sponsorship of Indianapolis Bike to Work Day Corporate Challenge as well as supporting initiatives and programs that promote bicycling such as the Mayor’s Ride, the NITE Ride, SustainIndy BikeWays, IN BikePort and Shifting Gears. The BFB program recognizes socially responsible businesses that promote healthy, happy, and green workplaces and provides a road map to become even more bicycle-friendly in the years to come. “Businesses across the nation are rising to the challenge of reducing their carbon footprint and improving the health of their employees - we are excited to be able to provide a roadmap to help achieve both these goals, and to recognize those companies that are leading the way," said Andy Clarke. “We’re very pleased to receive this recognition, not only for what we do for our employees to encourage them to bike to work, but also in recognition of the leadership role Bicycle Garage Indy and BGI Fitness have taken in the Indianapolis community to provide more bicycling opportunities and encourage the city to improve conditions for bicycling.
